Our story began in 1967, amidst the rural farmlands of Garrettsville, Ohio, where Don Hermann transformed a family recipe into a thriving business. The journey wasn’t without its challenges—Don had been in the live chicken business since 1938, until a devastating outbreak led him to pivot, using his personal recipe for homemade, less-sour refrigerated pickles to start anew.
It was a crunchingly good decision. From humble beginnings washing cucumbers in a basement sink, the Hermann family quickly gained a loyal following. Their pickles, steeped in natural brine, spices, and love, stood out for their exceptional flavor. Today, Hermann’s Pickles is a proud supplier to high-profile delis and restaurants such as Yours Truly, Winking Lizard, and Corky & Lenny’s, and our reach has expanded to countless homes and supermarkets across the United States.
In 1999, Hermann’s partnered with Nathan’s Famous, the iconic New York hot dog chain, producing pickles that are now enjoyed in over 6,000 supermarkets nationwide. While the partnership brought our pickles to a broader audience, the heart of Hermann’s remains the same: family values, timeless recipes, and a commitment to quality.
Every jar of Hermann’s Pickles starts with the freshest cucumbers, sourced from farms across North America, from Florida to Michigan, and even as far as Mexico. Our pickles are packed cold, preserving their natural flavor without the need for preservatives. Whether it’s our kosher dill, full-sour, half-sour, or sweet horseradish pickles, the result is a crisp, tangy treat that gets better with time.
At the helm today are Don’s sons, Larry and Karl Hermann, who have carried on their father’s legacy. Larry oversees production and local sales from our Garrettsville facility, while Karl drives sales and marketing efforts from Phoenix, Arizona. Together, they’ve grown Hermann’s into a competitive force in the pickle industry while staying true to their roots.
